Hi there, it’s Ash, aka the Still Life Nomad! So, you’ve got a bank account in New Zealand but don’t know how to get an IRD number? Then this post is for you!
What is an IRD number?
An IRD number is a tax number used in New Zealand, much like a social security number here in the US. It is required to ensure you get taxed the right amount. It is a must have before you start working!
How to get one
First, get a NZ bank account. See my previous account on how to do that. Then, go to Inland Revenue Department either online or in New Zealand once you move. Online is much quicker processing, however a lot of people prefer going in person for the customer support.
Next, gather your documents. You’ll need your valid passport, proof of NZ address, and proof of an NZ bank account. Complete the application in person or online and provide your documents. If approved, you’ll receive your IRD number within 10 business days. The process is completely free and necessary so do it within your first few days of arriving in New Zealand!
Proof of residency
To obtain your proof of residency, there are a few options. If you are staying in a hostel, you can request they write you a letter of short-term accommodation. Not all hostels will do this, so I recommend checking in before you move. If you are staying with flatmates, have them write up a lease. You can also get a PO box (you just need a passport!) and get mail sent to you. Alternatively, you can get mail sent in care of you to the hostel. These are all great and relatively easy options to obtain the proof of residency.
Once you obtain your IRD number you are clear to start working! I will write a post on how to get a job later on. Good luck and happy travels!
Love,
Ash
